Paul was retired from Ziegler Chemical and was a member of the Institute of Chemists. JENKINS, FRANCES ELIZABETH RUSSELL, age 88, of Concord, departed this life on August 15, 2002. She was born on October 13, 1913 in Greene County to William Finley Russell and Silence Anna Reese. She was a descendant of some of Tennessee's oldest pioneer families and joined First Families of Tennessee in honor of her great-great-great grandfather Col. Valentine Sevier and his father, Valentine Sevier, the Immigrant. The Russell family moved to Concord from Greeneville on the train in 1920. She attended the Concord School and after a school bus began picking up the children, she went to the Farragut Schools where she graduated as salutatorian of her senior class. She helped pay her way through Hiwassee College during the Depression by ironing shirts and managing the swimming pool. Frances began her teaching career at Farragut Elementary School and, after rearing her daughters, returned to teaching at Thackston School where she served as principal before retiring. She was a member of the West Emory Presbyterian Church and once served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher. Gardening, bird watching, reading, cooking good food, watching basketball games, and loving her canine grandchildren were some of her favorite things. She had great respect for Mother Nature. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, John Bryant Jenkins, her parents and 6 of her siblings including Jennie, John, Lois, Hugh, Tom, and Jack. Survivors include three daughters: Judy Jenkins of Concord, Lisa Huber and husband Jacob of Baltimore, MD and Geetia Jenkins of Concord. Brother Bill Russell and wife Ruth of Warner Robins, GA., several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and cousins. Hensley, Roger Dale, age 33 of Knoxville, TN, formerly of Unicoi, TN, passed away suddenly Sunday afternoon, August 18, 2002 in a motorcycle accident. Dale's organs were donated so that others may live. He was born in Asheville, NC., was a graduate of Unicoi County High School Class of 1986, and a graduate of East Tennessee State University Class of 1992. Dale was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. He was an employee of Wackenhut-Oak Ridge Team\NCI Information Systems. Dale was a member of the Oak Ridge Flyers, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the National Rifle Association. He held a private pilots license and was a HAM radio operator. He served God with great joy by writing, singing and playing contemporary Christian music. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James J. and Mary Ogle Hensley, Ben and Sallie Tipton; niece, Amanda Marie Hensley. Moore, James C. - age 82 of Farragut, passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 20, 2002 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Jim was a faithful deacon and leader at First Baptist Church Concord for nearly 40 years until his health began to fail. He also served FBC Concord as Sunday School Superintendent, and on numerous Building Committees. Jim served as a B-17 pilot with the 379th Bomb Group, Kimbolton England, in WWII and was discharged a captain from the United States Air Force Reserve. He retired from Union Carbide K-25 plant in 1981 with 36 years of service. Throughout life, he was an avid sportsman enjoying basketball, baseball, hunting and dog training. Hensley, Clarence W. age 75 of Lenoir City passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at Park West Medical Center. He was a member of Paw Paw Plains Baptist Church. Clarence was a retired foreman from Miller's Department Store. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by parents, Hamp and Geneva Hensley. Sarten, Herbert Dexter age 73 passed away Thursday August 22, 2002 at his home in Lenoir City after a courageous battle with cancer. Herbert was a 20 year Air Force Veteran who served in Vietnam. He was a deacon emeritus and Senior Adult Men's Sunday School teacher at Kingston Pike Baptist Church. He served as a civil engineer in the Air Force and later worked as a plumber. Herbert loved his Lord, he loved his family, and he loved his fellow man. He was preceded in death by parents, Joseph Lee Sarten and Laura Currier Sarten; and brother, Joe Curtis Sarten. Freels, Velma Magill - age 90 of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2002 at Life Care of Athens. She was a member of Hopewell Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Freels; daughter, Joyce Brown. Hughes, Susan Stewart Umpleby, age 59 of Tellico Village Community, Loudon passed away Wednesday morning, August 28, 2002 at her home. Susan was a member of Tellico Village Community Church where she was a Stephen Minister Leader and a member of Tellico Village New Villagers Board. She was retired from Christian Ministries of Delaware County, Muncie, Indiana where she was Executive Director. She was preceded in death by parents, Robert G. Umpleby and Mary Stewart Sheetz Umpleby; and brother, Jay Umpleby. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Gordon Hughes; children, Christopher W. Hughes of Greenville, S.C., Susannah H. Guinn, Lucille Kizer age 96 of Lenoir City passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at her home. She was a member of Cental United Methodist Church where she was one of the oldest living members and a member of the Keystone Sunday School Class. She loved to play bridge. Davis, Michael Wayne age 49 of Knoxville passed away Friday morning, August 30, 2002 at his home. Michael was baptized on May 4, 1961 at Mt. View Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving as a crew chief in the United States Air Force. Michael was predeceased by his mother, Lorene Archer Johnson. He is survived by his sons, Michael Garrett Hicks and Daniel Norton both of Knoxville; daughter, Angel; grandson, Braden Michael; father, Garrett Davis of Toledo, Ohio; sister, Linda Hicks of Knoxville; brothers, Mark Honeycutt and wife, Melinda of New Tazewell, Larry Davis and wife, Linda, Billy Davis of all of Toledo, OH; several nieces and nephews. Elliott, Mary Frances age 95, formerly of Potomac, Maryland, passed away Saturday Morning, August 31, 2002, at the Farragut Health Care Center. Mary was a member of the Potomac United Methodist Church. She established the Happy Hearts Program, in which children make get well cards to be distributed to other children that are critically ill. The program started at Potomac United Methodist and then spread to churches across the country. Mary received special recognition from the Pen Women in 1997 for establishing Happy Hearts. Born in Mt. Ranier, Maryland, Mary moved to Georgetown (DC) at age 12. She graduated Western High School class of 1924 in Washington, DC and received their life time achievement award. She graduated Wilson Teachers' College and the University of Maryland, studying communications. She taught in the D.C. Public Schools for 25 years. She pioneered creative techniques in Elementary Education via demonstrations in the classroom for teacher groups. She produced a children's story time radio show and one of the first children's television programs. Upon retirement from teaching, she moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, where she became an artist. Her work has been placed in private collections in Washington, South Carolina, New York, Florida, Sweden, Denmark, England and Norway. She moved to Potomac, Maryland in 1975, spending her summers painting in Maine. She came to Knoxville in 2001. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jesse and Virgil Elliott. Survivors: sister, Mildred E. Berl of Washington, D.C.; sister-in-law Birgit Elliott of Longs, SC; nephew Herbert E. M. Berl and wife Mary of Knoxville; niece Marianne Oystese and husband Brynjulv of Oslo, Norway; niece Janet Berl Burman and husband George of Syracuse, NY; nephew Robert M. Elliott of Stockholm, Sweden. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church with Father Matthew Dutton-Gillet officiating. Sexton, Gordon N. - age 89 of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2002 at his home. Gordon was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was a retired inspector with The Department of Energy and served in the pacific with the United States Army during World War II. Gordon was an avid bowler and a former Sr. Olympic National Title Holder in bowling. He was preceded in death by his parents, Othenal and Elizabeth Sexton; sister, Agatha Hampton; brothers, Fred and Jim Sexton. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lois Dunn Sexton; children: Dana Freshour of Lenoir City, Terri Tallent of Loudon and Nanette Fritts of LaPlace, LA.; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; sister, Linda Evans of Houston, TX; several nieces and nephews.
