Clemmer, Vester Lee - age 94 of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Farragut Health Care Center. Vester was known by friends and family as "Jack." He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and served many years as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was a member of IBEW Local 318 and was retired from Southern Railway in Lenoir City. Preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Vola Irene Quillen Clemmer. He was the last survivor in the immediate family of William Alexander and Callie Naomi Isabel Clemmer. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Elsie Kerley and Myrtle Webb and brothers, Hulet, Hubert and Ewell Clemmer. McDaniel, Wynona Soward (Nelle) - age 85, a lifelong resident of Lenoir City, passed away Sunday morning, August 3, 2003, at the Baptist Health Care Center. Nelle was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City and was a past member of the American Legion Auxillary. She worked at Oak Ridge during the years the atomic bomb was being developed. She later enjoyed being a loving wife, mother and grandmother and godmother to 2 ½ year old twins, Autumn and Summer Davis.  Preceded in death by her husband, Green McDaniel along with her parents, eight sisters and one brother. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Watkins and husband, Bill of Lenoir City; son, David McDaniel and wife, Gaynelle of St. Marys, West Virginia; granddaughters: Amy Watkins Harrison and husband, Andy of Lenoir City, Bryna McDaniel of St. Marys, West Virginia and Stacy McDaniel of Charleston, South Carolina; sweet friends, Mickey Durall and Laurie Davis; several nieces and nephews. Macular, Claud Massel (Mac) age 79 of Knoxville, formerly of the San Francisco Bay area   passed away Monday  morning, August 4, 2003, at Baptist Hospital West in Knoxville, TN.  Claud was born on August 27, 1923 to Jessie and Ruby McCullar in El Dorado, AR.  He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp during WWII serving as a flight engineer  on B-24's in the South Pacific.  Claud was an engineering manager  associated with power plant piping design and construction for the Bechtel Group of San Francisco for 33 years.  He was an avid golfer and a member of the Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland, CA.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) McCullar, parents, and brother, Woodrow McCullar.  Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dave DuRegger of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Robert DuRegger, and Amy DuRegger of Knoxville, and Jason DuRegger and wife, Barbara and their daughter Megan of Charleston, SC; brother and wife, Donald and Merle McCullar of Village Mills, TX, sister-in-law, Imogene McCullar of Shreveport, LA, and several special nieces and nephews and cousins.  The family will receive friends from 1 - 2 p.m. Saturday with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m in the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel.   Grave side service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday  in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, CA.  Memorials may be made to National Emphysema Foundation, 15 Stevens Street, Norwalk, CT 06856 or Macular  Degeneration Foundation, Inc., P.O. Denton, Michael Davis age 54, of Lenoir City, currently residing in Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003.  Mike was born February 2, 1949.  He was a member of Central United Methodist Church.  Mike was a true Patriot and proudly served with the U. S. Whittington, Janice Maynard age 61 of Strawberry Plains and more recently of Dallas, TX, passed away quietly Monday afternoon, August 11, 2003, at her mother's home after a short battle with cancer. Jan was a lifetime member of Trentville United Methodist Church. She was a Flight Attendant for American Airlines and still active after 35 years. Jan graduated from Carter High School and from the University of Tennessee with a BA degree in 1963. She was preceded in death by her father, W. H. (Bill) Maynard. Cranfill, Verda age 88 of Lenoir City passed away Monday, August 11, 2003 at the Brian Nursing Home in Canton, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Cranfill and son, Kenneth Brooks. Perkins, Alan Robert – age 51 of Knoxville, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at his home.  Alan  was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.  He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, nature photography, and amateur radio.  Alan was born in Hanover, NH and was raised in Alexandria, VA. He was retired from American Ecology in Oak Ridge. A member of the OCAW. Captain Wayne was a member of the VOL Navy and loved to play his keyboard and was the wake up call on game day. Ableiter, Nellie Reed - age 92 of Lenoir City, formerly of Leisure World, Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2003, at her home. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Nellie was born in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota, where she graduated from the University of North Dakota. She was a Red Cross Nurses Aid during World War II. Nellie was a true entrepreneur working as an interior decorator, a realtor and later in life managing two hospital gift shops. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Hazel Reed; husband, J. Kenneth Ableiter;  a grandson along with three sisters and one brother. Miller, Ruby Lee Branaum - age 76 of Loudon, formerly of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2003, at her home. Ruby formerly attended Highland Park Baptist Church in Lenoir City. She and her late husband owned and operated the former Sunoco Service Station in Lenoir City. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; sisters, Edith McCallie and Ocie Lewis; brothers, Sam and Mitch Branaum. She is survived by her brother, James K. Branaum and his wife, Edith, with whom she made her home; sister, Rosalee Nokes of Douglasville, GA; several nieces and nephews. Guider, Ernest C. - age 72 of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2003, at his home. He was of the Baptist Faith. Ernie was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army.  He was an employee of Hawkins Mortuary for eight years. Ernie served three terms as Sheriff of Loudon County from 1962-1968 and as a United States Deputy Marshall form 1970-1991. He was a member of American Legion Post 70 and a lifetime member of Fraternal Order of Police. Ernie was also a Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Perry and Sarah Elizabeth Guider; sisters: Louise Rymer, Christina Sowards and Novella Guider; brothers, Perry (Bud) Guider and Kenny Guider. Proaps, James R. (Bob) - age 76, of Lenoir City, went to be with the Lord Sunday morning, August 17, 2003. Bob was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City for 71 years and the Avery Masonic Lodge #593 F&AM. He  was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army . He was a retired environmentalist working with the Loudon County Health Department for 40 years and as a Loudon County and Lenoir City Health Officer for 30 years. Bob was instrumental in opening the first Loudon County Health Department on January 2, 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Lilly Belle Proaps; brothers: Raymond, Paul, Kenneth, Wayne and Harold; sister, Willie Ruth. Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Delores E. Watkins, Robert I., age 78 of Athens, passed away Wednesday morning, August 20, 2003 at his home.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens.  Robert retired from Atlantic Steel.  He served in the U. S. McKinney, Grady Eugene (Gene) age 83 of Farragut passed away Wednesday evening, August 20, 2003 at Park West Hospital. Gene was a member of Concord United Methodist Church for 52 years and was an active participant in the choir, serving as choir director in early years.  He served on various church committees. He was a talented craftsman, building the communion table, altar railing, pulpit, lectern and baptismal font for the CUMC. In 2000 Gene revised and extended the written history of the church. In 2003 he completed a display case to house collections from the original Concord Methodist Church. He performed in many Clarence Brown Theatre musical productions and was a past member of the Knoxville Choral Society. Gene retired as Advertising Manager from Robertshaw Fulton Co with 44 years of service. Since 1997 he was an archaeological computer draftsman for the Torre de Palma Project, Portugal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Grady (T.G.)and Mae McConnell McKinney. Survivors: wife of 60 years, Helen Patton McKinney;  daughters and son-in-law, Sarah McNabb of Louisville, KY, Nancy and Richard Romanus Sr. of Roanoke, VA; grandson, Richard Romanus Jr. of Seattle, WA; brother and sister-in-law, Vernon L. and Peggy McKinney of Knoxville; nieces, Karen McKinney-Taylor and husband John of Knoxville, Janet Scott of Nashville; several cousins and two special friends, Stephanie and Tom Maloney of Louisville, KY. Lance, Don R. age 59 of Knoxville passed away early Friday, morning August 22, 2003, at his home after a 33 year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. Don was retired from the U. S. Air Force as a Staff Sgt. After retirement, Don worked with the Monroe  County Sheriff's Dept and was a volunteer with the Monroe County Rescue Squad. He was a Golden Eagle Charter member of the National Rifle Association. Don enjoyed NASCAR, fishing, the lake and traveling. He loved his babies, Lulu and Skeeter. Don was of the Baptist faith and believed in the Lord and Jesus Christ.  He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ginger Lance who was also his best friend; son and special friend,  Roger Reagan and wife, Kim, son, Cecil Reed and wife Shona; granddaughter, Taylor Moody; several other grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; special nieces, Carla Captain and Jackie Morgan and husband Mike; special nephew, Charles Reagan; sisters-in-law, Mitzi (Sis) Shirey, Becky Shirey and husband Greg all of Knoxville, Lenoir City and Oak Ridge and many extended family members in Tellico Plains. Hartsook, Mildred Alice Evans age 83, a native of  Lenoir City passed away Friday, August 22, 2003, in Asheville, NC.  She had lived in the Asheville area for the past three years.  Mildred retired from Lenoir City Utilities Board in 1985 after 17 years of service.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City.  She was born January 2, 1920, in Lenoir City, the daughter of the late William Frederick and Martha Jane Monger Evans.  She was the widow of James Martin Hartsook, who died in 1982.  She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Rupert, Jerry, and Raymond Evans, and three sisters, Grace E. Gallaher, Irene E. Edwards, and Eva Lee E. Robbins.  She is survived by one sister, Louise E. Ferguson of Lenoir City; two daughters, Linda Hartsook Lewis and her husband, Bob of Asheville, NC and Jane Hartsook Nacke and her husband, Phil of Washington, DC; four grandchildren: Robert Martin Lewis and his wife, Chris of Asheville, NC, Ashley Marie Lewis and her fiancee, Rick Patriacca of Edwards, CO., Evan Philip Nacke of Washington, DC and Cambridge, England, and Eliot Anthony Nacke of Washington, DC and Durham, NC; two great grandchildren, Anna Grace Lewis and Oliver Martin Lewis of Asheville, NC.   The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City with funeral services to follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Liao, Rui-Ru, age 83 of Taiwan passed away Friday, August 22, 2003 at the home of her daughter in Knoxville, TN.  She was born on April 5, 1920 in Silo, Taiwan to Dr. Jen Liao and Dan Tchen.  Mrs. Liao was a retired Home Economics teacher in Taiwan for thirty years.  She graduated from Taipei's Third Girls' High School and Tokyo Women's College.  Mrs. Liao was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Dr. Chan-Hwei  Liu.  Survivors include son, C.Y. Driver, Penelope C. (Penny) age 50 of Knoxville, formerly of Bowling Green, KY, passed away early Saturday morning, August 23, 2003, at her home. Penny was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church in Bowling Green. She was an employee of Peninsula Behavioral Health Services in Knoxville serving as Director of Community Development. Penny was a past board member of IAPRS, and a long-time teacher of Journey of Hope. She was a member of NAMI, TMHCA and TAMHO. Penny  was on the Tennessee Region Two Mental Health Council and on the Mental  Illness Awareness Coalition. She was a graduate of Bowling Green High School. She received her bachelors and masters degree from Western Kentucky University. She received another masters degree from the University of Tennessee. She was a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors: parents, Carl and Maryland M. Driver; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sheila and Leo Frank of Bowling Green, Sherry and Chuck Keown all of Bowling Green; nephews, Seth Frank and wife Windy of Johnson City, TN, Chad Frank; nieces, Charli Anne, Samantha and Jillian Keown all of Bowling Green; several aunts and uncles. Liles, Herman Smith- age 88 of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday evening, August 23, 2003, at the Ft. Sanders Loudon Hospital. He had been a resident of Loudon Health Care for three years. Herman was a member of Hines Valley Baptist Church. He retired from Eatons School and was a longtime farmer. He served in World War II with the United States Army. He was a member of the Eaton Ruritan Club. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Fain Liles; parents, Walter and Ethel Rupe Liles; brothers, Carson and J.W. Liles. Hollis, Margaret Ann Brown (Buck) - age 81, of Lenoir City, passed away Saturday evening, August 23, 2003 at the FT. Sanders Loudon Hospital. Margaret helped establish Bills Restaurant in Knoxville in the 1940s. She was a former member of the Flying Boatmen Club, the West Hills Garden Club, and the VFW Womens Auxillary. Pruitt, Alice Marshall - age 59,of Loudon, passed away Wednesday evening, August 27, 2003, at the Parkwest Medical Center. She was a member of Bell Avenue Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Donn Smith Stelzer, age 44 of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away after a short illness in Parkwest Hospital on August 27, 2003.  Donn was a graduate of Alexis I duPont High School, Wilmington, Delaware as well as both the Hoffman Flight School and the United Jet  Training Center of Denver, Colorado. He was Chief Pilot for T & T Ball Corporation of Knoxville, Tennessee.  He was an aviation enthusiast from his teens and the Civil Air Patrol was his stepping stone to the wonderful world of flight.   He is survived by his wife Nancy Cook Stelzer and son Christopher Glenn Stelzer; his parents Glenn and Marion Stelzer of Greenville,  Delaware; his sisters Susan Stelzer Dickinson of Fareham, England; Jeanne Stelzer/Shroy of Carson City, Nevada; and several beloved nephews  and a niece.   A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 30, 2003, in the Chapel of the Cokesbury Center across the street from the  Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Knoxville, Tenn. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.  A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church with Father John Dowling officiating. Shirk, Valerie of the Tellico Village Community, Loudon passed away Sunday, August 31, 2003.  She was born October 11, 1936 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Elaine and Benjamin Hexham.  Siblings include Martin Hexham (deceased), Pete Olack (Renee) of Michigan, Richard Olack (Gail) of Michigan and Sherry Qualkenbush (Donald) of Loudon.  She married longtime friend Edward Shirk on November 17, 1956 in Michigan and raised three sons, Michael (Kristine) of MI, Steven (Cheryl) of NC, Randall (Kimberly) of CT and one daughter, Denise Cobb (Charlie) of MI; eleven grandchildren include: Michelle, Anna, Brandon, Jared, Amanda, Dustin, Karen, and Julia Shirk, Joseph, David and Emily Cobb.  Valerie was an avid ceramic artist and taught classes to share her art.  She also was accomplished in crocheting, supplying each family member with a keepsake afghan in addition to the many, many afghan's she gave as gifts.  Valerie had a wonderful, never ending sense of optimism and a heart of gold.  She gave generously of herself to her communities both in Michigan and Tennessee. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend!  All who knew her, were blessed by the gift of her friendship, counsel and wisdom.  She loved life, her crafts and her soaps, but above all else, she loved her family.  The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Lenoir City.  A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. with Father David Boettner and Father John Dowling officiating.
