Helinske,
Marian Elizabeth Swann (Muti)
age 71
of Knoxville, formerly of Chattanooga. It is with sadness that we, the
daughters of Marian, inform you of our mother's death. It is with joy that
we tell you she is in the presence of our Lord. She died a peaceful death at
home "in her pink room" on June 12, 2004, 4:25 PM surrounded by family,
friends, music, prayers, hugs, kisses and love as she entered the arms of
Jesus. She was as brave and courageous in death as she was in life. She had
absolute confidence in her faith and absolutely no fear as she faced what
she called an adventure in going from this world to the next. The legacy she
leaves for those who loved her is one of total peace, no regrets, teaching
us so much in her life and so much through her death. Marian was a life long
Baptist and spent her final years being loved and prayed for by the
congregation at Farragut Fellowship Assembly of God. The last church she
attended was Central Baptist of Bearden. Marian was born in LaGrange, GA May
6, 1933, a child of the Depression Era living in several places throughout
Georgia and Tennessee. Despite her poor surroundings, she was a happy,
optimistic child and teenager whose diary indicates a fun-filled social life
and lots of time on the phone! Marian was an avid Bible reader and was
baptized by Rev. J. Harold Smith at the age of sixteen. She was obviously a
Christian and enjoyed memorizing bible verses and sharing her faith with any
and all . Hers was an enthusiastic and incredible sense of humor that
delighted anyone who knew her and that she thankfully passed on to her
children. When Marian was around, there was always lots of laughter. Marian
knew how to throw a party and was always the life of a party. She was
frequently called "Miss Manners"! She was a military officer's wife for 23
years. She lived in Germany and Alaska and claimed she could only tan by the
Mediterranean Sea in Italy! While her husband fought wars, she raised two
daughters and was an incredible homemaker. The woman could cook, sew, teach
Sunday school, participated in numerous committees, was a Girl Scout leader,
a prolific letter writer, tennis player, water-skier, bowler, bridge player,
a defender of the underdog, and a secretary at various jobs. The reason she
could do all these things so well is because she would "structure her day."
Her last job of twenty years was as super-secretary at the Behavioral
Medicine Department at Ft. Sanders where she amazed everyone with her
ability to juggle numerous duties, numerous doctors, and keep an incredible
smile on her face. To say anyone who knew Marian really loved her seems
trite but it's true. Were there ever eyes so brown? Was there ever such a
giving and forgiving spirit? Her wit, her humor, her love and grace, even
her benign sarcasm lived in the hearts of those who knew her. If someone had
a need, Marian would fill it. If someone needed a kind word, Marian would
say it. If someone needed to be jacked-up, Marian could do it! Amid all the
silliness, there was never any doubt that her heart belonged to Jesus. A
faithful wife, devoted mother, child of God… our loss is Heaven's gain. In
addition to her husband, Norman, Marian was preceded in death by her
parents, Leon and Ruby Swann; sister, Nancy Swann. Survivors: daughters and
son-in-law, Catherine and Jack Montgomery of Knoxville, Hope York of
Hermitage, TN; grandchildren, Marian Heather Montgomery of Knoxville,
Jonathan and Nicholas York; step grandchildren, Ericka Nix and her husband
Jeff of Atlanta, GA, Amanda Draper and her husband Xavian of Macon, GA, Jay
Montgomery of Atlanta, GA; step great-grandchildren Griffie Knoop, Catie and
Dillon Nix; sisters, Anna Jo Coffelt of Soddy Daisy, TN and Janice
Montgomery and her husband Larry of Keithville, LA; special friend and soul
mate, J. Drury Patteson (Dr. Pat) of Knoxville who loved her before her
illness and never wavered, who has been grafted into our family forever...
there will never be another Pat. A special thanks to "The Speck" (dear
Cathy) , also to sweet Kaye, to wonderful Rachel, to the incredible people
at Farragut Assembly of God who always held Marian and all of us "up in
prayer" and to the ladies who gave of their time to come sit and visit with
Marian, to Dr Byrd who finally helped us to understand, to Adventa Hospice
especially Shirley and Sandy. Marian lived with and was cared for by her
daughter Catherine and son-in-law Jack…a word about Jack. Whatever Marian
wanted, Jack made sure she had it ! He loved Marian and always promised her
she would stay at home throughout her illness "in her pink room". He
protected her dignity and wishes to the end and loved her with the love of a
true son. Please join us for a wonderful time celebrating the life of a
special soul. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 6:45 PM Tuesday
followed by a Celebration of Life at 7 PM in the Click Funeral Home Farragut
Chapel with Rev. Sonny Kirkendall officiating. Family and friends will
gather at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the National Cemetery for grave side
