Johnson, Maxie Mixon,
age 91 of Maryville Tennessee, formerly of Ocilla Georgia, passed away
Sunday morning December 31, 2000 in Maryville. Maxie was born November 18,
1909 in Irwin County Georgia to the late Wright and Susan Tucker Mixon.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Maryville. Maxie was
a first grade teacher at Sam Houston Elementary School in Maryville from
1951 until her retirement in 1973. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Ishmael Herman Johnson Sr. Survivors: Sons, Herman Johnson Jr. of
Des Moines Iowa, David Michael Johnson of Maryville. 3 grandchildren; 7
great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will
gather at 11 A.M. Saturday January 6, 2000 at the Brushy Creek Primitive
Baptist Church Cemetery in Irwin County Georgia for graveside services.

| Wheeler, Mary Nell age 84 of Sweetwater passed away Monday evening January 1, 2001 at N H C Healthcare in Oak Ridge. Mary Nell was a member of Fenders United Methodist Church in Sweetwater. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Georgia Hembree Wheeler; brother, George Wheeler sisters, Trixie Wheeler and Myrtle Wheeler Patterson. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Brady of Ohio along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great great nieces. Atchley, Betty Ruth
Runnion age 71 of Lenoir City, passed away Monday, January 1, 2001, at
the Park West Hospital. Betty was a member of Vaughns Chapel Baptist
Church. She was retired from Lowry Henshaw Clinic in Sweetwater as a
Medical Technologist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger
Birdwell Atchley Sr; grandson, Colin Passmore; sisters, Pearl Brackett and
Clyde Hammontree; brothers, Capt. Billy Runnion and Sgt. Winston Runnion.
Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Roger Passmore of Benton,
Mary and Charles Fethe of Farragut, Marie and Mike Hall with whom she made
her home; son and daughter-in-law, Roger Birdwell Atchley Jr and Diane of

Montgomery, Hattie
Murphy, age 93, of Farragut, Tn., passed away Monday, January 1, 2001
at the Park West Medical Center. Hattie was born February 24, 1903 in
Nashville, Tn. She was a former resident of Sarasota, Fl. and Birmingham,
Mi. before moving to Tennessee. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert
Joseph Montgomery; sister, Lois Murphy Goode of Lenoir City, Tn. and
brother, Albert Gwill Murphy of Cadez, Ky. She is survived by her son,
Robert R. Montgomery & his wife, Helen M. of the Tellico Village
Community, Loudon, Tn.; sister, Harriett Montgomery Zullo & her
husband, Joseph of Livingston, N.J.; sister, Mary Murphy Stilber of
Sarasota, Fla; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 1 great great

| Gouge, Wayne, age 65, of Lenoir City passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at his home after an 18 month battle with cancer. He was a graduate of Knox Central Class of 53. Wayne served in the U. S. Marines from 1953- 1955. He retired from Bell South with 36 years of service. He loved his family, his 1982 Dodge pickup, tour-bus travel, and his morning walk with his friend, Dewey Easton and Pepper. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Rose Gouge; and his brother, Roy Gouge. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pat Gouge; son, Randy Gouge of Cookeville; brothers and spouses, Jack & Barbara Gouge, Perry & Peggy Gouge; sister, Mary Catherine Gouge all of Knoxville; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gouge of Memphis; brothers-in-law and spouses, Bob & Sue Vincil of Cleveland, Wayne & June Vincil, and Bill Vincil of Lenoir City; sister-in-law, Geraldine Bare of Florence, Al.; several nieces and nephews; also surviving are Ford Road area friends and neighbors of 40 years who have been like family. Lettie was a member of Sixth Avenue Church of God, the Senior Sunday School Class and the Golden Age Group. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. A. Jenkins; son, Walter Jenkins; daughters, Jennie Jenkins Bolt, Laura Jenkins Acuff, Nellie Jenkins Shirk and Frances Jenkins. Billington, Lester C.Age
71 of Knoxville died Saturday, January 6, at his home. He was a member of
All Saints Catholic Church in Knoxville. Lester was a veteran of the
Korean War, serving in the army. He was employed at Honeywell in MN before
moving to Knoxville. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a mechanical
engineer at Allied Signal and Union Carbide. His favorite past times were
fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Gail
Billington, brothers Kenneth and Gary. He is survived by his wife of 49
years, Bonnie J. Billington; Daughters Renee & husband Earle Woolley
of MN, Sandra & husband David Ferguson of Knoxville; Sons Bradley
& wife Sue, Mark & wife Barbara, Stephen & wife Joann all of
MN, and Chris of Knoxville; Mother, Mabel Billington of MN; Sisters Carole
Grebel of FL and Judith Clark of MN. Grandchildren Lisa, Leisa, Brandon,

| Peerman, James R. ( Lt. Colonel Ret. U.S. Air Force) age 74 of Lenoir City, passed away Sunday morning, January 7, 2001 at the St. Marys Residential Hospice. Jim was retired from the United States Air Force. After his retirement, he worked in real estate in Florida before returning to Tennessee and enjoy farming. A member of Avery Lodge #593 F&AM in Lenoir City and a 32 degree Mason. He belonged to the Retired Military Officer Association and the Eaton Ruitan Club. He was preceded in death by his parents Willie Carl and Cora Belle Reed Peerman; brothers: David E. and L.B. Peerman; special aunt, Daisy P. Johnson; special friends, Bernice and Boyd Baker. McDaniel Age 80 of West
Knoxville, formerly of Seguin Texas, passed away Tuesday evening January
9, 2001 at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. She graduated from Texas
Lutheran College. Emily was a member of Church Street United Methodist
Church where she sang in the choir and participated in the church’’s
Soup Kitchen program serving the less fortunate. Emily was dedicated to
being a homemaker to her family. Over the years she also served as a Girl
Scout leader in Corpus Christi TX and Charlotte NC, participated in Meals
on Wheels and spent thousands of hours as a volunteer at Children’’s
Hospital in Knoxville. Emily was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard
King McDaniel and Emma Enck McDaniel; sisters, Leona McDonald and Margaret
Albers. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Oran L.
Culberson; daughters and son-in-law, Suzanne and Robert Kita of Bailey CO,
Eileen Schlatter and Carol Rimmer both of Farragut; grandchildren, Oran
Kita and wife Jennifer, Scott Kita, Valerie Richardson and husband Jay

Griffith, Evelyn Duff
Cardwell, age 82 of Oak Ridge, formerly of the Oral Community and
Kingston, passed away early Thursday morning January 11, 2001 at the
Briarcliff Nursing Home in Oak Ridge. Evelyn was a member of Kern Memorial
United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. She was retired from the Kingston
City School System with 17 years of service as an elementary school
teacher. Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was

Friday January 12, 2001 at St. Marys Hospital. Eric was a loving husband,
son and father. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature and life. Eric

member of New Providence Baptist Church and the Andi Harper Sunday School
Class. She was a 3rd grade student in Becky Edwards Class at Steekee
Elementary School, was on the A Honor Roll and was nominated as a young
achiever. Nikki was a member of Brownie Troop #382. She was a cheerleader
for the Loudon Quarterback Club Hoppers. Nikki was preceded in death by

Ruth Blanton age 89 of Lenoir City passed away
on January 27, 2001. She was born Edna Ruth Sturgill on March 23, 1911 in
Wise County, VA. She was married to George Dewey Blanton of Norton, VA
from 1930 until his death in 1951. Surviving sons and daughter-in-laws
are: Drs. Horace and Priscilla Blanton of Knoxville, TN; Robert and
Ernestine Blanton and Steve and Betty Blanton, all of Lenoir City, TN.
Surviving daughters and son-in-laws are Evelyn and Ray Hetman of Smyrna,
TN; Carol and Elmer Smith (deceased) of Pembrooke Pines, FL; and Janice
and John Graves of Knoxville, TN. Surviving brother and sister-in-law are
Ed and Jackie Sturgill of Pound, VA. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren,
16 great- grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in
death were daughter and son-in-law Geraldine and Keith Loyd of Columbus,
IN. Siblings preceding Ruth in death were Shirley Sturgill Shipley of
Kingsport, TN; Frank Sturgill of Oak Ridge, TN; and Joseph and Quince
Sturgill, both of Wise County, VA. Edna Ruth and George Dewey moved with
Horace and Geraldine to Norris, TN. in 1935 where Mr. Blanton was employed
with the Tennessee Valley Authority in the construction of Norris Dam.
Robert was born in Norris in 1936, and the family moved to Hiwassee Dam in
North Carolina where Evelyn was born in 1938.
The family moved permanently to Lenoir City when construction of Fort Loudon Dam was started at the beginning of World War II. Carol was born in 1943 followed by Janice in 1948 and Steve in 1950. Following the death of George Dewey in 1951, Ruth single parented her children to adulthood. She was employed at Eastern State Psychiatric Hospital from 1964 until her retirement in 1977 as a psychiatric aide in the drug and alcohol unit. She was certified by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health as a psychiatric aide in 1968. She followed her state certification with continuing educational training at The Southeastern School of Alcohol Studies at the University of Georgia. She also completed courses of study in Developing a Therapeutic Community and Remotivation Techniques under the auspices of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health. Ruth was an expert quilter and her quilts reflected her creative spirit. She was an avid gardener and loved all aspects of nature. Edna Ruth remarried in 1978 to Lois Ervil Cupp of Maryville, TN. who died in 1990. The family will receive family and friends at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City, TN. from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28. The Reverend Clay Mulford will officiate at the funeral services to be held in the chapel of Click Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 29 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Lake View Cemetery. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Katherine Bailey Dyer; parents, James Thomas Dyer and Pearl Palmer Dyer; brother, Charles (Chuck) Dyer; sisters, Ruth Dyer Gibboney, Ollie Mae Dyer and Catherine Louise Dyer. Survived by his daughters, Brenda Edmonds, Patricia White and Janet McKinney all of Kingston, Marie McFalls of Loudon, Betty Taylor of Ohio; son, Billy Dyer of Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Petty and Frances Morgan both of Lenoir City; brothers, James (Beachard) Dyer of Maryville and Paul Dyer of Lenoir City; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services 2 P.M. Saturday in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randy Griffif and Rev. David Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in the Loudon Co. | Wilson, Joyce Underwood age 53 of Loudon passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at her home. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City where she was very active in the choir. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Byron and Polly Underwood. She is survived by her husband, Jackson N. Wilson; step-daughters, Kima Riding and Janice Knox; two step-grandchildren, Kendahl Knox and Dylan Brown; several cousins. | Cagley, Thomas A. age 86 of Loudon formerly of Lenoir City passed away Thursday, February 8, 2001 at the Loudon Hospital. He was a member of Pine Top Primitive Baptist Church for many years. Tom retired from Oak Ridge Y-12 plant and was a lifetime farmer. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim Cagley, Charlie Cagley and Earl Cagley; sisters, Fronia Ward, Alice Lindsey and Myrtle Stevens; and son Leslie Cagley. Survived by wife, Amy Stevens Cagley; sisters, Nora J. McGinnis and Hattie Cagley; brother, Carson McMahan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
