Christensen, Merritt Eudell, age 71 of Kingston, Tennessee, formerly of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Minot, North Dakota, passed away Monday afternoon, July 3, 2000 at Park West Hospital, in Knoxville ,Tennessee. Merritt was retired from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, with 33 years of service, as a Professor of Journalism. He was also a reporter, with the Minot Daily news, but teaching was his life. Shelton, Walter Cleveland age 93, of Kingston, passed away Tuesday evening, July 11, 2000, at Roane Medical Center. Cleve was born in Coffee County, Tennessee, on December 17,1906, the son of John Walter and Emma Elizabeth (Jordan) Shelton. He was married to the former Ruby Murray who died in 1977. Cleve and his wife, owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Harriman, for many years. Prior to moving to Harriman, they lived in Nashville, where Cleve worked as a barber. They moved from Harriman to Kingston in 1958, and retired from the store in the early 1970's. Cleve was a veteran of World War II, and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his wife and parents, Cleve was preceded in death by his son, Larry Cleve Shelton, who died in 1996; by his siblings, Stephen Ewin Shelton, Charley Newman Shelton, and Kitty Ruth Shelton Hardaway; and by a nephew, Bruce Hardaway. He is survived by a special sister in law, Leona Shelton of Lenoir City; two nieces, Jane Hardaway of Antioch and Brenda (Hardaway) Bradford and husband, James of Brentwood; and a nephew, Roger Hardaway of Alva, Oklahoma. Nixola was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church where she joined in 1915 when she was eight years old. She also taught Sunday School for many years. Nixola began working at age 16 at the Charles H. Bacon Hosiery Mill and later retired from Yale & Towne with fifteen years of service. Schlecht, Edward Robert (Ed) age 75 of Knoxville Tennessee, formerly of Park Forest Illinois and East Mauch Chunk Pennsylvania, passed away Monday afternoon, July 24, 2000 at U.T. Hospital in Knoxville. Ed was born in East Mauch Chunk on February 11, 1925, to Adolf Schlecht and Adele Fibbich Schlecht. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Park Forest Ill. Ed was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He was retired from Alfred Benesch and Co. Consulting Engineers in Chicago, with 27 years of service. Ed was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Navy, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Admiralty Islands. He was a member of the American Legion in Jim Thorpe PA. Ed was a member of the Park Forest Ill. Planning Commission for over 40 years. He was also active in the village government there. Ed was an avid bridge player and gardener. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters, Erma Schlecht and Natalie Schlecht Fenskie. McEvers, Robert Allen ("Rob"), age 35 passed away at home on July 28, 2000 as a result of cancer. Rob was born in Orlando, Florida on December 21, 1964 to Dona and Jim McEvers. The family moved to Oak Ridge in June 1974 and to West Knoxville in 1976. Rob lived with his parents in Farragut since suffering a severe traumatic brain injury in November 1987. He graduated from Farragut High School in 1982 and attended Roane State Community College. At the time of his accident, Rob was attending Pellissippi Community College in a pre-engineering program with plans to join the Navy upon graduation. He held several jobs while attending college. These included designing and building playground equipment, selling building materials, making pizza, dancing, and tending bar. While living in Oak Ridge, Rob was a member of Boy Scout troops 321 and 327. In high school, he "lettered" in the Farragut High School Swim Team. Prior to the time of his accident Rob’s interests included, modeling, working out and staying fit (he never smoked or drank), swimming, water skiing, motorcycle riding, painting and drawing, fishing, hiking, "beach bumming" in the Florida Keys, and raising plants and flowers. At the time of his death, his interests included fishing, raising plants and flowers in his greenhouse, and still "beach bumming" in the Florida Keys when possible. His beloved grandmother, Martha Evelyn McEvers, and his grandfather, James Edward McEvers, both of Longwood, Florida, preceded him in death. His sister, Angela Dawn McEvers-Jones of Knoxville, his mother, Dona, and his father, Jim McEvers, of Farragut, survive him. Other surviving relatives include: grandmother, Agnes E. ("Midge") Friend of Farragut, aunt and uncle Patsy and Timothy M. McEvers of Seymour, aunt and uncle Diane and Jack Richmond of Cleveland, Tennessee, cousins Patrick McEvers of Seymour, and Wayne McEvers of Sparta, Tennessee, and cousins Reagan and Stephen Richmond. Out-of-state relatives include: his uncle James D. Friend of Orlando, Florida, James M. McEvers of Makanda, Illinois, Terry M. McEvers of Herrin, Illinois, Rozanne and David Bogis of Pinckneyville, Illinois. Dona, Angela and Jim would like to thank everyone for their kindness to Rob, as well as their prayers, encouragement, understanding, and help over the past several years. Millikan, Alfred Garnett, Sr. (Barney) - age 84 of Knoxville passed away Thursday, July 27, 2000. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Concord. He was born in Chattanooga and raised in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. His family moved to Knoxville when he was a young man and owned Millikan and Sons Grocery Stores. He was one of the original owners of the Tic-Toc Drive-In on Magnolia Avenue. Mr. Millikan was in sales his entire life, selling cement for Cumberland, Portland, and Marquette cement companies. He continued his sales career working for Dixie Products and Magic Chef of Cleveland, Tennessee, and for Vesta in Athens, Tennessee. For many years Mr. Millikan was the National Salesman for White Consolidated Industries. Mr. Millikan was a veteran of World War II serving in the Merchant Marines. Preceded in death by his parents, Linah Elihu and Fannie Ragain Millikan and brother, Oscar Lee Millikan. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Daisy Bennett Millikan (Debbie); children, Alfred Garnett Millikan, Jr., James Tanksley Millikan, Katherine Millikan Davis and husband, Guy Davis, Bennett Elihu Millikan and wife, Meg Jones Millikan; a sister Frances Millikan Parris, sister-in-law Elsie Millikan; nephews, Lowell Parris, Charles Parris, Pat Parris, nieces Diana Parris Turley, Alex Millikan Cox; and several great nephews and great -nieces. Hendrix, Sydonna Yvonne, Lenoir City, passed away Saturday July 29, 2000 at Parkwest Hospital. Yvonne was a member of the Cornerstone Church of God in Farragut, where she played the piano. A member of the Ladies Aglow and formerly played the piano for the Eatonwood Church of God and New Vision Praise and Worship Center. Robertson, Amanda Josephine Snodgrass, age 79 of Knoxville, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 30, 2000, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. Amanda was born December 11, 1920 in Nashville, Tennessee. She attended Nashville public schools and Ward_Belmont College. Amanda was married on March 20, 1942 to James E. Robertson. They resided in Nashville until 1957. They lived in Asheville, North Carolina, for seven years, before moving to Knoxville in 1964. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension for 36 years. Amanda was preceded in death by her husband and by her brother Joseph Snodgrass. Survivors: sons, James E. Robertson III and wife Claire of Olney, Maryland, William J. Robertson and wife Cynthia, Stephen H. Robertson and wife Jeannie all of Knoxville, granddaughter Caroline of New York City, grandson Carrick of Olney, Maryland. Volenski, Dr. Leonard (Len), age 64,died late Monday evening, July 30, 2001, at his home in the Tellico Village, Community Loudon, Tn. Recently retired, Dr. Volenski had served in the priesthood, had been a research fellow at Princeton Theological Seminary, a Practicing Clinical Psychologist, and a Professor of Psychology at Seton Hall University. He had recently relocated from Princeton, NJ, to Loudon, TN, to marry Angie Galler Vaughan, of Knoxville, TN on his birthday, Sept. 16, 2001. Dr. Volenski is survived by his bride to be; 2 nephews and a niece in New Jersey and one niece in North Carolina.
