Obituary for Loraine Russell McConkey

Loraine Russell McConkey, formerly of Riverview Road, Lenoir City, Tennessee burst through the gates of Heaven on Monday, October 30, 2017 just one week shy of the 68th anniversary of her 29th birthday. (She was born in 1920). Loraine did not let being confined to nursing home care for almost a year and a half preceding her death keep her down, instead she kept the staff at Harriman Care & Rehab on their toes and at her beck and call, and they came to love her for it. She was a devout Christian who read her Bible daily when she was well and loved working Bible word search puzzles. Loraine was a faithful and lifelong member of West Broadway Baptist Church where she was an active in her Sunday school class and a 50 year member of the Ladies West Broadway Singers. Loraine raised her daughter, Carolyn, while working since the age of 16 in millinery industry in Lenoir City and Knoxville, for the longest time as a seamstress sewing breast pockets on men’s suits at the Palm Beach Mill from where she retired in the 1990s. Loraine was preceded in death by the following: her father, George Newton Russell; her mother, Grace Williams Garrett, and step father, William Garrett; her daughter, Carolyn McConkey Hartness; her brother, Alvin Russell (a WWII veteran), and her sister, Naomi “Tootsie” Garret Voiles. She is survived by her sister, June Garrett Brookshear and brother-in-law, Allen Brookshear of Fountain City, Indiana; her nephews, Neal Brookshear and Kevin Brookshear; her neice, Diane Nicholson and her nephew Gary Voiles; (all of Indiana), and her son-in-law, Harold Hartness of Knoxville, her special cousin Janice Lawson Wheeler of Waynesville, NC as well as many grand/great nephews and nieces and cousins; special neighbors, Loretta and Mike Walker. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, November 4th at West Broadway Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Frank Weaver and Rev. Bob Gamble officiating. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to West Broadway Baptist Church of Lenoir City, Tennessee and the St. Judes Foundation. A special thanks those Sunday school and church members, friends and family members who took time to call, visit and check on her while she was residing away from home and to the nurses, care staff and administrators at Harriman Care & Rehab for their kind care.
