Obituary for Owen David Ross

Owen David Ross, age 82 of Loudon, TN passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Parkwest Medical Center. He was born in Garnett, Kansas on March 22, 1935 to John Louis and Ardath Ross. He was raised in Yates Center, KS and joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served during the Korean War on the USS Essex. It was in the Navy that he was trained in Air Traffic Control and after leaving the Navy, he spent 37 years with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration. He was proud of his work with the Department of the Navy, Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center, Naval Research Architecture and Design Group, San Diego, CA and the Department of Energy of Oak Ridge, TN where he was Manager, Special Projects within the Office of Air Traffic System Management, Future Systems Program. It was in this capacity that he helped design and implement a new Air Traffic Command Center for the United States. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Louis and Ardath Spohn Ross; his daughter, Cecelia Johnson; his brothers: James Ross of Prairie Village, KS and John Ross of Belen, MN and sisters: Patricia Manyak of Prairie Village, KS and Kathleen Keplinger of Cherryvale, KS. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ruby (Rowell) Ross; daughters, Rebecca Mabry of Trabuca Canyon, CA; Elizabeth Braukmann of Forest Grove, OR, Jennifer Carlson of Huntington Beach, CA; and Porsche Shantz of Lenoir City, TN; sons, David Ross of Lenoir City, TN and Ray Shantz of Loudon, TN. Also survived by siblings, Irvin Ross of Pinellas Park, FL and Evelyn Eldredge of Overland Park, KS. Owen and Ruby also shared a wonderful collection of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church, 1580 St. Thomas Way, Lenoir City with a Funeral Mass following at 11 a.m., graveside at Lakeview Cemetery with full military honors conferred by Loudon County Veterans Honor Guard and reception afterwards following.
