Obituary for Sylvia Claire Idom

Sylvia Claire Idom was born December 18, 1947 in Jackson, MS and died March 29, 2017 at Turkey Creek Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. She was preceded in death by her father Louie E. Idom. She is survived by her mother, Norma Idom, brothers, Michael and Paul (Donna), and nephews Matthew and Brian.

Sylvia graduated from Karns High School and Tennessee Wesleyan College then attended graduate school at Western Kentucky University. She taught English at Bradley County High School for three decades. During her college and early teaching years she worked summers with the United Methodist Holston Conference Camping programs. She took one year off from teaching to serve as Director of Camp Lookout. After years of camping she became a summer volunteer at the Mountain Farm Museum at Oconaluftee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where she contributed well over 2000 hours as a living history demonstrator displaying domestic skills of a mountain woman circa 1900. An avid storyteller, she was a founding member of the Cleveland Storytelling Guild. After retiring from teaching she worked at the Museum at 5points, Cleveland, and at Red Clay State Park. For the past year and a half she was a volunteer for the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Oak Ridge.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Graveside services and interment will follow immediately at Loudon County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holston Conference Camping and Retreat Ministries, Jack and Ruth Porter Scholarship Fund (http://www.holstoncamping.com/donate-to-scholarship-endowment-funds.html) or to Central United Methodist Church in Lenoir City.
