Obituary for Janet Ruth Carroll

On Friday, January 11, 2019, Jan Carroll, awe-inspiring Wife, Mother, Mother-in-law and Memom, passed away at the age of 79 at her home in Tellico Village, Loudon, TN with her husband and children by her side.

Jan was born on September 11, 1939 in Harlan, Ky to Virgil and Ruth (Lovell) Kelly. She was raised one of 8 children in the Closplint/ Everts communities of Harlan, KY. She received her cosmetology license in 1959 and worked for many years in the Harlan area. On February 10, 1961 she married Robert (Bob) Carroll of Harlan, KY. They raised two children, Kimberly and David. They spent most of their life in the Harrogate, TN/Middlesboro, KY area until moving to Tellico Village in 2001. She had many years of church and community service which included The Harlan United Methodist Church, Mountain Heritage Hospice, Harlan, KY (Board Member), Harrogate United Methodist Church, Harrogate, TN (Board Member and Sunday School Teacher), First Baptist Church of Middlesboro, KY (Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Youth & College Leader, WMU Director and Kenya South Africa Mission Team), Middlesboro Boys Group Home (Board Member and Volunteer), United Way of Kentucky (Board Member), Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN (Visitors Board), Tellico Village Community Church, Loudon, TN (Mission Board, Stephen Minister, Sunday School Teacher and Women’s Ministry), Child Advocacy Center, Lenoir City, TN ( Founding Board Member).

Jan had three passions; her family, her church and being an advocate for children. She also loved playing golf with her husband and with the ladies’ group at Tellico Village. Jan was also an amazing and selfless hostess and cook. If you were ever on the receiving end of her famous Banana Pudding or Peanut Butter Fudge, consider yourself blessed! She was known for her warm hugs, her infectious smile, her joyous and compassionate spirit and being the very first person on any dance floor. You could often hear her say to everyone in earshot…”Come On Let’s Dance!” But everyone knew her favorite dance partner was her husband Bob. They commanded the dance floor like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Jan was preceded in death by; her parents Virgil & Ruth Kelly, brothers Bobby Ray Kelly and Gerald Kelly, sister Barbara Kelly Kotmair. She is survived by her husband Bob, her children and their spouses Kimberly & Mark Johnson, College Grove, TN, David & Kristie Carroll, Cumberland Gap, TN, granddaughter and husband Olivia & Judson Smith, Columbia, TN, grandsons Tanner Carroll of Pineville, KY and Cameron Gambrel of Cumberland Gap, TN. brothers, Sonny (Brenda) Kelly, Loudon, TN, Larry (Dianne) Kelly, Fredericksburg, VA, Terry (Dee Dee) Kelly, Belvidere, Ill and sister Audrey (Jim) Watkins, Pawleys Island, SC and also special friends Bryson & Robert Orr and so many wonderful loving friends of the Tellico Village Community.
