Obituary for Jarrell "Jay" Dutton Searcy

Jarrell “Jay” Dutton Searcy passed away early Saturday morning, December 29, 2018, surrounded by his family at his home in Tellico Village, Loudon, TN. He was 84.

Jay worked for 44 years in the newspaper business, serving as a sports editor at the Chattanooga Times, a feature writer and copy editor at the New York Times, and an executive sports editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer. He grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, where both of his parents worked at Y-12, and got his start in writing as a high schooler at the Oak Ridger before moving to the Kingsport Times. He was awarded the Nat Fleischer Award for excellence in boxing journalism, twice named Tennessee Sportswriter of the Year, and honored as a member of the Chattanooga, Oak Ridge, and Tennessee Sports Writers Halls of Fame. In his retirement Jay authored his first book The Last Reunion: The Class of 1952 Comes Home to the Secret City (2010).

Survivors include Jackie Hildebrand Searcy, loving wife of 62 years; sons Michael Jarrell Searcy (Cheryl) and Mark William Searcy (Patti); grandchildren Cameron Searcy (Bridget), Lauren Searcy, and Aaron Searcy; brother Charles Searcy (Joyce); sisters-in-law Janie Santoro and Karen Dalton; and niece and nephews: Lori Santoro, Steve and Andy Daffron, Ryan and Chris Searcy, Brian and Jason Dalton, and Jacob Levinson. Jay was preceded in death by parents H.J. and Dovie Searcy and sister Mary Glenn Daffron.

A memorial service will be held at the Community Church at Tellico Village on Saturday, January 5th at 11:00 a.m.. with receiving of friends to follow. Donations may be made in Jay’s memory to Smoky Mountain Service Dogs, 110 Tooweka Cir, Loudon, TN 37774
