Obituary for Lee Kramer

Elmer Leroy (Lee) Kramer, 83, of the Tellico Village community, died December 18, 2018.

He loved to remark on what a great life he had had, full of hard work, lots of laughter (he loved a good joke), and the love of family and friends. He was known for his deep loyalty (he remained an Alabama fan even after moving into Deep Orange Country), fierce competitive nature, fairness to all no matter their background, laser sharp wit, light feet on the dance floor, and natty style of dress.

The only child of a farmer/pie salesman and cafeteria worker, he was the first in his family to graduate from high school. He went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati despite his parents’ discouragement (they felt he should start working immediately rather than pursue more education) and then graduated first in his business school class while working full-time and raising his first child. He took special pride in having attended Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.

He had a storied career starting as a butcher in a local Kroger’s grocery store. A well-timed thank you note led to his being hired at Kahn’s Foods. He spent his career in meat packing companies, fighting unions and developing tasty new meat products to compete with his chief rival, Oscar Mayer. He eventually rose to become the SVP of Sara Lee. Along the way he mentored numerous young people in whom he saw special potential, encouraging education above all else. He was the recipient of numerous awards including the NAACP’s Medgar Evers Award, which recognized Lee’s ideals of equal treatment for all.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan Kramer; son, Keith Kramer; daughter, Kelly Kramer Allen and her husband, Jack Allen; daughter, Tracy Kramer Richmond and her husband, Russ Richmond; and 3 grandchildren, Grant Richmond, Ruby Richmond, and Juniper Richmond.

Family will gather in remembrance at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on December 26th at 10:30AM; Mass will follow at 11:00AM.

A celebration of life will be scheduled for early 2019.
