Obituary for Mitchell Dean Smith

Mitchell Dean Smith of Tellico Village passed away surrounded by his beloved family on November 15, 2017. He was 89 years old.

Mitchell was born in Watertown, Tennessee on June 13, 1928 to Claude C. and Louise Duncan Smith. He graduated from Watertown High School and began studies to become a civil engineer at the University of Tennessee. Mitchell also was a member of the United States Naval Reserves, and after his second year of college, he was called up for duty to serve in the Seabees (Construction Battalion), helping to build the runway at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

After receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1951, Mitchell married his high school sweetheart, Amy Jo Van Hook, moved back to Knoxville and finished his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from UT in 1954. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and earned many awards during his college career. Upon graduation, Mitchell and Amy Jo moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Mitchell began working for Howard Needles engineering firm. He accepted a position with the Federal Highway Administration as a bridge engineer in 1961 and moved his family to Jefferson City, Missouri. He transferred in 1970 to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Mitchell was on the team that designed one of the longest bridges in the world known as the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. Upon retirement from the FHA, Mitchell accepted the challenge of opening the Phoenix, Arizona office of the engineering firm T.Y. Linn International.

In 1992, Mitchell and Amy Jo moved to Tellico Village in Loudon, Tennessee where he spent over 20 happy years golfing and boating with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “Papa” loved to teach the grandchildren how to drive a golf cart and to be the captain of their boating adventures. The family would like to thank all of the nurses and caregivers at NHC, Farragut, Tennessee who took such loving and kind care of Mitchell in the past few months.

Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents Claude C. and Louise Duncan Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Amy Jo Van Hook Smith; his three children, Phillip V. Smith (Sue Haddenhorst), Susan Gulley (Larry), and Emily Anderson (James); his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
